American Silver Eagle Monster Box

The Silver Monster Box is the United States’ Mint shipping box for the American Silver Eagle. This green plastic box is 15” x 8.5” x 4.5” (and will weigh around 42 pounds depending on shipping packaging used by their sellers). It is sealed tight with plastic straps labeled with the mint’s location which is currently West Point. The boxes are also likewise labeled with the Mint’s seal molded into the plastic. A serial number is written in indelible ink on the box. The Monster Box contains 500 BU American Silver Eagles. They are in 25 rolls, each roll having 20 of the silver bullion coins. The rolls are semi-translucent white plastic with a green cap having the Mint’s seal on it.

The United States’ Mint does not offer the American Silver Eagle Monster boxes directly to the public. These boxes are only shipped to “authorized purchasers”. In 1986 when these rounds were first available there were twenty-five such distributors. These distributors pay a premium for each coin over the current market value for silver. On October 1st, 2010 this premium was reset to $2/coin. These buyers must order no less than 25,000 coins at a time.

The authorized purchasers must fit the following criteria:

1) They have to be a “market-maker” in silver bullion coins (someone who has experience and is established in selling and buying silver coin bullion).

2) They must have a liquid two-way market for these coins.

3) An internationally-accepted accounting firm has to audit them once a year.

4) They have to have an existing diverse retail base in order to distribute the coins.

5) And a tangible minimum net-worth of $5 million (a letter of credit will do).

The American Silver Eagle is the largest one dollar coin the United States Mint has ever produced. They are one troy ounce of 99.9% silver (there is a very small residual of copper from the refining). A troy ounce is slightly heavier than the English measure system ounce. One troy ounce weighs 31.103 grams, while an American standard ounce weighs 28.35 grams. As an example of size difference: the American Silver Eagle is 40.6mm (1.598”) in diameter, and the Morgan silver dollar is 1.5” (38.1 mm) in diameter. The Morgan dollar weighs 26.73 grams and is 90% silver and 10% copper thus containing 0.7736 troy oz of silver.

The obverse has by Adolph A. Weinman’s well loved “Walking Liberty” designed used on the United States half dollar from 1916-1947. The reverse has John Mercanli Herald design including the traditional Bald Eagle with national shield and thirteen stars in the field above. Even though this silver bullion has denominational value of one US dollar, the Act of Congress that authorized these coins stipulated that the mint was to sell them for market value plus whatever processing fee necessary to make a profit from them in addition to producing a denominational coin.

These boxes are perfect for those who want to invest in large quantities of silver. They make acquiring and storage very easy and since each box not only represents a quantity of a singular 500ozt, but it can be sold off in smaller quantities. Either as 25 rolls of 20ozt, or 500 rounds of 1ozt silver bullion. These “Monster Boxes” provides a flexibility that large silver bullion bars cannot offer.
