Silver American Eagle Monster Box

Silver Monster Boxes refers to the large boxes that a nation’s mint ships its one troy ounce silver bullion coins.  The convention is 500 coins in 25 rolls of 20.  Three of the best known silver monster boxes are from the United States of America, Canada, and Austria.

The United States of America’s Mint will sell these to certified dealers at a premium and then these dealers can sell them sometimes as individual coins, or rolls of twenty, and even in the sealed box of 500.  The silver bullion coins from the US monster boxes are always the American Silver Eagle even though the US Mint strikes a wide variety of silver coins.  The obverse has Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty redesigned to fit these 40.6 millimeter diameter 99.9% fine silver coins.  The monster boxes are 8.5” x 14.5” x 5”.

Most investment consultants recombined having a 6% to 8% of an investment portfolio in precious metals.  Silver monster boxes can be an excellent way to achieve this. These boxes are usually kept sealed with the mint’s marking to insure the contents have not been tampered with as well as making transporting and storage easy.  Dealers always sell bullion over spot price (market value) and these prices will vary from dealer to dealer; for instance if the dealer claims $2 a coin then 500 will mean an additional $1,000 per monster box.

If silver is selling for $30 per troy ounce then the market value will be $15,000, plus the dealer’s mark up brings the total to $16,000.  Two dollars over spot is very low, $3-$5 is more realistic bringing the price of the example $16,500 at the bargain basement press and $17,500 is more likely.  Looking at silver today at $33.60/ozt then 500=$16,800 then add $3/coin=$18,300.

A few dollars a coin/ounce can raise the price very quickly and some dealers will have extra fees.  Shipping and handling may be accumulative for each coin or by weight, if this is calculated by weight the box and its tubes may also be figured in.  Within the United States the purchase maybe subjected to a sales tax if shipped from within the same state.  Also shipping from one country to another can also add extra fees.

A number of dealers will offer a lower price over spot for purchase made by bank wire.  Not only does this secures their payment but usually quickens the shipping process.  Most dealers will withhold shipment until after they have received payment.  There are other reasons that may come up for a dealer to delay shipping.  It is important to read each dealers purchase agreement.  If anything seems unclear you should be able to call for clarification.  Some dealers will insist that all orders have to be called in.  Also a minimum order maybe stipulated and very large orders maybe more closely scrutinized.  Physical silver as opposed to an account is typically preferable although some dealers do offer vault space for your purchases.  Most home insurance plans can be adjusted to cover coins.  This is only a brief list of things to be mindful of when buying larger quantities of silver coins.
