Modern US Commemorative Silver Coins got initiated by the United States House’s desire to have a silver half-dollar to commemorate the 250th anniversary of George Washington’s birth in 1982.  Following this two different commemorative silver dollars were made for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics; the “Discus Thrower” for 1983 and the “Coliseum” in 1984.  The success of these was capitalized on in 1986 with the “Statue of Liberty Half-Dollar”, then in 1987 the “Constitution Bicentennial Dollar”, and ever since there has been at least one silver commemorative coin released by the United States Mint.

One of the more recent collectible Modern US Commemorative Silver Coins that the House of Representatives approved is the Mark Twain Commemorative coin on April 18, 2012.  The Senate version was introduced on November 30, 2011 and when passed 350,000 one dollar silver commemorative coins will be struck in 2016.  The original intent was to have the coin available in 2010 which was the 175 anniversary of Mark Twain's birth and the 125th anniversary of his novel; “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”.  The $5 surcharge will be divided amongst four different Mark Twain associated education institutions.
