Individual Providences of Argentina started minting their own currency shortly after their first uprising against their Spanish Viceroy in May 1810.  Then on July 10, 1816 they agreed on a declaration of independence however it was not until 1860 that all of the providences came together in agreement on a constitution and declared themselves the “Republica Argentina”.  Even though the Spanish had built Argentina’s first mint in 1779 Argentina did not official establish their national mint “Casa de Moneda de la Republica Argentina” until 1875.  Two branches were designated to be built one in Salta and the other in Buenos Aires which opened on February 14, 1881.  In 1896 Argentina minted their last precious metal coins for circulation.

1994 Argentina 5 Pesos Constitution Celebration

One of the earlier series of silver bullion Argentina’s mint released is the National Constitutional Convention silver bullion coins.  These were minted in 1994 in two denominations; the 2 pesos which is 30 millimeters in diameter and weighs 12.5 grams, and the 5 pesos which is 35 millimeters in diameter and weighs 35 grams. Both of these are 90% silver and have reeded edges.  The obverse has Argentina’s coat of arms on the upper center and below the shields of “PARANA” and “SANTA FE” both of which hosted the conventions.  The names of the cites are in small lettering above each one, “REPUBLICA ARGENTINA” is in large letters encircling the top of the coin and separated by dots from “CONSTITUCION NACIONAL” encircling the bottom in medium sized letters.  The reverse has the constitution as an opened book in the center and the denomination under the “$2” and “$5” under that following the rim is “25.v.1994” and this is separated by dots from “CONVENCION NACIONAL CONSTITUYENTE” around the rest of the coins.

Argentina has minted are more than a dozen different series of contemporary 90% and 92.5% silver bullion coins.  Typically the one peso silver bullion is 90% silver are 37 millimeters in diameter and have a gross weight of 25 grams.  There are also five peso silver bullion coins and these are typically 92.5% silver and are 40 millimeters in diameter and have a gross weight of 27 grams.

To give a sample listing of some of these other silver bullion coins it seems fitting to mention that two of these series celebrates the World Cup (of Soccer); the first are three 5 Pesos silver coins for 2006 in Germany and the second is one five pesos piece for 2010 in South Africa.  The rest are for a variety of important national events, people, and worldwide ideals.  One of the most current series in for 2010 and celebrates the 75th Anniversary of Argentina’s Central Bank.  This silver bullion depicts the bank’s doors on one side and a very modern minimalistic profile of Liberty’s head on the other.  Another, from 2002, commemorates the 50th anniversary of Eva Peron’s death.  Then in 2007 there is the centennial for the discovery of oil in Argentina.
